At Fleischwaren Berger, packaging is more than just protection - it is part of the quality promise. “Especially with fresh ham, the packaging must protect the product perfectly - from light, oxygen, and drying out,” explains Claudia Berger, who is responsible for packaging procurement. At the same time, requirements for recyclability and legally compliant materials are increasing. Paper is not an option, so Berger is increasingly relying on functional mono films. These films are fully printed, with a white backing, to optimally protect and present the ham under the bright lights of supermarket shelves. Balancing product protection and sustainability requires partners with expertise - and flexibility.

Flexible packaging with quality: How Berger combines delivery reliability and technical expertise with Packmatic

Berger became aware of Packmatic rather by chance - but the collaboration quickly developed into a permanent fixture. Claudia Berger recalls: "Until then, I had never worked with packaging distributors, only directly with manufacturers. But we gave it a try - and it worked." Packmatic was integrated as a second supplier for thermoforming film. It quickly became clear: the support was personal, deliveries were reliable, and the material was high quality - at very competitive prices. Another critical factor was the establishment of a warehouse in Vienna, which enables flexible call-offs during short-term retail promotions. This ensures supply security at all times.

“Packmatic is a reliable partner for us on equal footing. The support is personal, committed, and solution-oriented – exactly what we need in a dynamic market environment with increasingly strict requirements. Quality, delivery reliability, and direct communication make the collaboration truly valuable for us.”

Packmatic’s APET-PEfilm also impressed technically. During qualification, the films were tested onstandard GEA, Multivac, and Ulma machines. In addition, Berger’s in-house laboratory conducted durability tests, measured gas levels, and assessed the residual oxygen and discoloration of the product. “The material has to work flawlessly - otherwise we can't list the item at all,” emphasizes Berger. The films performed perfectly in the first test run - they were machine-compatible from the start, visually and haptically identical to the previous ones, and met all quality requirements.

Berger now also draws on Packmatic's expertise for development projects related to recyclable mono-material solutions. What makes the partnership with Packmatic special for Berger is not only the in-depth packaging knowledge and large supplier network, but also the human touch. Claudia Berger appreciates the short communication channels and the dedicated contact persons – "You can tell that someone really cares. It's straightforward, pleasant, and solution-oriented." The strength of the collaboration was particularly evident in challenging times, such as during COVID pandemic or in relation to the necessary changes for the upcoming PPWR. For Berger, it was a strategically important step to broaden its supplier base and choose partners who are not only technically and financially suitable, but also a personal fit.

The collaboration between Fleischwaren Berger and Packmatic demonstrates how technical expertise, reliability, and personal support can go hand in hand. Through joint material changes, structured testing processes, and a warehouse in Vienna, Berger was able to make its packaging more sustainable - without compromising on quality or availability. For Claudia Berger, one thing is certain: “We would recommend Packmatic anytime - because it simply works. And because the people behind it are great.”
